We All Scream for Ice Cream

We All Scream for Ice Cream

Amy Konkle discusses her time as a newfound business owner at Icebergs Italian Ice & Gelato

Amy Konkle and her husband, Eric, took over Icebergs Italian Ice & Gelato and just recently became the new business owners. For years, Amy explained how she and her husband have always talked and dreamed about owning their very own ice cream and coffee shop, and once they saw the store’s previous owners’ post at the beginning of the summer that they decided to retire and sell the business, Amy and her husband immediately took the opportunity and started working with Teresa and Frank over the summer. They spent time teaching Amy and Eric how they make their ice cream, passing down their tips and tricks along with all the recipes, before ultimately closing in September.

Now this place may seem like a small hideaway at first, but the flavors offered are delicious and unique, just like the shop’s atmosphere. Providing a different range of ice cream and gelato, with flavors like peppermint white chocolate Italian ice or blackberry mascarpone gelato. Even having affogato as well, an Italian coffee ice cream made with their own coffee bar in-store, ready to make any latte or cappuccino you desire.

“We recently started doing our own thing too, so some of the flavors, like the cinnamon apple, the chocolate cherry, and the banana caramel cookie, those are all things that we created on our own,” – Amy explains.

Amy is also always open to taking customer requests. With her cinnamon apple ice cream flavor stemming from a customer wanting an apple pie flavor, and after many experiments with the different flavor profiles, that’s the idea she ultimately came up with.

“I would say a good 75% of the new flavors are things that customers come and ask about, and then we try it.”

And while they did take over an already existing business, Amy’s inspiration goes beyond just her experiences now, but also her childhood: When she was a kid, she used to always go over to her grandparents’ house, whether it be after work, school, or swimming practice. And just getting to have ice cream and coffee with her grandparents was a meaningful and big thing to Amy; it was a big part of her life almost every day.

“It was a comfort, nostalgia thing for me. I feel like it’s an experience that I would want other people to be able to have too.” Amy said, a tradition filled with warmth and contentment.

Her inspiration for flavors at the moment is the shifting of seasons, moving more towards winter and festive flavors, so customers would want to come even during these cold months. And as always, feel free to check the store out and leave flavor recommendations, as this town works best when all are brought together. The perfect way to pass that feeling of joy on, one scoop, sip, and memory at a time.
