The moment you step into Classy Chocolate in Downtown Liberty, the sweet scent of cookies and decadent chocolate fills your nose. The aroma of warm vanilla air wraps around you, drifting from the oven and trays. It’s a cozy, loved-in-place that has been a bakery for the past 21 years. Continuing to blossom and grow.
The owner, Shari Metcalfe, grew up watching the women around her household bake and find enthusiasm in creating. When she watched her mother and grandmother in the kitchen, that was something that truly inspired her.
“I used to I don’t bake with my mom and my grandmother at Christmas time or even just throughout the year. So, they are really the ones who taught me how to do all of these things. All the cookie recipes are either my grandparents’ recipes or friends’ recipes.” – Shari explains.
What she likes most about being a store owner is the creative freedom she gets to express. There’s not a corporate person telling her what needs to be done. She’s able to work at her own pace and under her own conditions, which results in a lot of new recipe ideas. Take her strawberry frosting, for example, a staple for her cookies that were created by too many leftover strawberries, not knowing what to do with them. A happy accident that customers beg for more.
“I get to create things that I want to do, and nobody else. Like today, I made a Rice Krispies tree roll-up. just for fun. I love to do this kind of thing. And everything just fell into place, so it worked out perfectly.” Being her own boss isn’t just her job- it’s her passion. “I had no idea that we would last this long, and I’m so incredibly grateful that we have.”
Every recipe of Shari’s holds a meaning. A memory or story passed down from family or shared by friends. And after two decades, Classy Chocolate is still going strong. This little shop has blossomed so much more. Becoming a taste of home for the whole community.
